Rotten Bananas, Hip Hop Heads, and the American Individual: Teaching Eddie Huang’s Memoir Fresh Off the Boat and Its Tropes of Literacy

This essay focuses on Fresh Off the Boat as an eminently teachable coming-of-age story, provides critical contexts and directions for teaching this ideologically suggestive text, and sets forth the interpretive argument that the structures and themes of the memoir are fundamentally shaped by the literacy narrative at its core. As such, the text enters into conversation with other literacy narratives that have become so foundational in the teaching of multiethnic literature in the U.S. Moreover, Huang’s tropes of literacy draw from enduring, mythified Americanist discourses that are suggestive of a masculine individualism that, while not unique, is recognizable, instructive, and even problematic as an illustration of a powerful discourse of self-formation. In an effort to speak not only to specialists in U.S. multiethnic literature but also to nonspecialists/generalists, this discussion offers a tripartite approach to teaching this memoir: opening the unit with a sustained, critical, and creative discussion of genre(s), including traditional and popular forms; then inviting students to hone their critical thinking skills through careful rhetorical and ideological analyses of the text’s representations of race, identity, assimilation, and resistance; and ultimately setting forth a focused, conceptual argument about Fresh Off the Boat as a “literacy narrative” while placing the text within a broader U.S. literary history and discourse about the American individual

[Review of] Gilbert L. Wilson. Buffalo Bird Woman\u27s Garden: Agriculture of the Hidatsa Indians

    Get PDF
Buffalo Bird Woman\u27s Garden was originally published in 1917 as Agriculture of the Hidatsa Indians: An Indian Interpretation. First written as Wilson\u27s doctoral dissertation, the book is particularly informative about the gardening techniques of Hidatsa women. The narrative voice is that of Maxidiwiac (Buffalo Bird Woman). Thus, the book fits within the genre of as-told-to autobiography; however, the narrative is more focused and detailed than Wilson\u27s general autobiography of the same woman, Waheenee: An Indian Girl\u27s Story, published in 1921

Nanofluids (NFs) are nanotechnology-based colloidal dispersion prepared by dispersing nanoparticles (NPs) in conventional liquids, as the base liquid. These advanced fluids have displayed potential to enhance the performance of conventional heat transfer fluids. This work aims at providing an insight to the field of NFs by investigating in detail the fabrication and evaluation of physico-chemical, thermo-physical and heat transfer characteristics of NFs for practical heat transfer applications. However, in order to utilize NFs as heat transfer fluids in real applications there are some challenges to overcome. Therefore, our goal is not only to optimize the thermo-physical properties of NFs with the highest thermal conductivity (TC) and minimal impact of NPs on viscosity, but also on preparing NFs with good stability and the best heat transfer performance. In the first stage, detailed studies were carried out to engineer NFs with good stability and optimal thermo-physical properties. In this work we investigated the most important factors, and the dependence of thermo-physical properties of NFs, including NP composition and concentration, NF stability, surface modifiers, particle size (NP size and particle with micron size), NF preparation method (two-step vs one-step method) and base liquid was studied. We also demonstrated, for the first time, the role of crystal structure, exemplified by alpha- and beta- SiC particles, on thermo-physical properties of NFs. For these purposes several NFs were fabricated using different nanostructured materials and various base liquids by one-step and two-step methods. An optimization procedure was designed to keep a suitable control in order to reach the ultimate aim where several stages were involved to check the desired characteristics of each NF system. Among several NFs systems studied in the first stage evaluation, a particular NF system with 9 wt% concentration, engineered by dispersing SiC NPs with alpha- crystal structure in water/ethylene glycol as based liquid exhibited the optimal thermo-physical properties. This NF was the only case which could pass the all criteria involved in the optimization procedure by exhibiting good stability, TC enhancements of ~20% with only 14% increase in viscosity at 20 oC. Therefore, this engineered NF was considered for next phase evaluation, where heat transfer coefficient (HTC) tests were designed and carried out to evaluate the thermal transport property of the selected alpha- SiC NF. A HTC enhancement of 5.5% at equal pumping power, as realistic comparison criteria, was obtained indicating the capability of this kind of NFs to be used in industrial heat transfer applications. These findings are among the few studies in the literature where the heat transfer characteristics of the NFs were noticeable, reproducible and based on a realistic situation with capability of commercializing as effective heat transfer fluid.  QC 20140416Nanohe

Avco Lycoming quiet clean general aviation turbofan engine

A fan module was developed using an existing turboshaft engine. The fan was designed using the latest in large engine noise control technology. A mixer was added to reduce the already low exhaust gas velocity. A nacelle incorporating sound treatment was provided for the test engine. A noise prediction model was used through the design process to evaluate the various design alternatives. Acoustic tests were then made to verify the prediction and identify the noise characteristics of the fan, core, jet, and sound treatment. Analysis of the recorded data yielded close agreement with the expected results. Core noise, as was expected, was the predominant source of noise for the quiet clean general aviation turbofan (QCGAT) engine. Flyover noise predictions were made which indicated that the Avco Lycoming QCGAT engine would meet the goals set for the QCGAT program

In Response: A Discussion of Bulimia as a Masturbatory Equivalent

My research and that of my colleagues in the psychodynamic cause, structure and treatment of patients with bulimic anorexia nervosa correlates with and confirms the hypotheses presented by Levin ( 1) that bulimic symptoms may represent a masturbatory equivalent. In our recently published book, Fear of Being Fat: The Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia (2) we confirmed Sperling\u27s findings (3) that unresolved preoedipal fixations to the mother contribute to difficulties in psychosexual development and that anorexic girls and boys displace sexual and masturbatory conflicts from the genitals to the mouth

The Star Formation Histories and Efficiencies of Two Giant HII Regions in M33

    Get PDF
UBVUBV photometry is used to re-identify the OB associations which power the two most luminous HII regions in M33, NGC 604 and NGC 595. There is a significant difference (2-3 Myr) in the ages of the most recent star formation episode in these two regions, while NGC 595 also has undergone a prior episode of star formation (10-15 Myr ago). These data, combined with the presence of molecular clouds in the heart of NGC 604, suggest that molecular clouds may survive at least one intense episode of massive star formation. The star formation efficiencies (mass of stars per mass of gas) of these two HII regions are up to a factor of 3 larger than the average efficiency in the inner disk of M33 or in Galactic molecular clouds, but are still only 2-5\%.Comment: 26 pages including 2 figures, uuencoded compressed postscript file (Figure 1 not available electronically).
